(SEE PHOTO AT BOTTOM) This lady has some of the bests posts on healthy eating, habits, wellness, etc. I was surprised, however, to see THIS in my email box! I highly recommend something like this for those of us who don't want to sit on the ground and try to get back up or bend over all the time. Personally, I'll probably make mine a bit taller and longer; however, you DO NOT want to make it wider as you'll be defeating the purpose.
If you have bad soil, drainage problems, too many weeds and don't want to scrape them up, nothing but a patio, or just don't wanna bend over, THIS IS THE WAY TO GO! http://wellnessmama.com/36971/diy-planter-box-tutorial/
And: I highly recommend subscribing to her newsletter - at least do the weekly one.
If you're thinking about my last post about renting a city plot for a dollar to grow your garden, I've got a lady in Public Services checking into that. We should have the skinny on that today or tomorrow.
If you're still planning, instead of planting, I want you to look at the Sow True Seed Planting Guide @ https://sowtrueseed.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/STS-Planting-Guide.pdf , for info on when to plant. PAY ATTENTION to the column on "direct seed" (plant straight in the ground) or "transplant": this will still get you a head start.
Why? Because the AVERAGE last frost date for our area is April 2nd (see http://content.ces.ncsu.edu/average-last-spring-frost-dates-for-selected-north-carolina-locations/ for other NC frost dates). This DOES NOT MEAN IT IS SAFE TO PLANT MANY OF YOUR PLANTS/SEEDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Ag. Ext. office says 10 days either way... but if you are like me, I'm not taking any chances. It can frost in May. You can sow some seed now and plant some plants (see plant guide), but others you might want to be on the safe side and wait just a couple more weeks.
If you just cannot stand it and have to plant now, you'd better have some tobacco sheets or the like, to cover them up if the chill comes!
Want more gardening 101 in one page? This is another great post: http://kgi.org/how-to-grow-a-kitchen-garden?gclid=Cj0KEQjwxpipBRCap8PR2Om7vq4BEiQA6V7OVdz0paCwJ2lIuHglp0R1u2R6R-nh1ewSb_MvrxfbPBUaAimT8P8HAQ
Until next time, I'd better not see you on the street without dirt under your fingernails or gloves in your back pocket!

P.S. If you're into HEALTHY COOKING ON THE FLY, I happen to love Fit Men Cook on YouTube! They've got lots of sweet potato recipes (we can get organic sweet potatoes, or slips TO PLANT, here in Wilson... I'll get you that info before next time) and all sorts of healthy stuff. Check this one out! (BELOW THE PLANTER BOX) If it doesn't appeal to you, I GUARANTEE some of his other recipes will!
